The issue with the workaround for now is that even though it is selected in the background by admin it still requires an action by the customer/user before price will show, why?
Do you mean, you have default selected variation in the product backend but it is not selected on the frontend for the user.
If I missed anything, could you record me reproducing your issue using a tool like this? https://www.useloom.com
It helps me to quickly figure out the issue.

how do i create a blank swatch. the reason for this is that we have an attribute that requires selection of two colours however these we also have two materials so if the client selects a specific material then they need to select from a sepcific selection of colours not all the colours. This means that the attributes for the other materials must be a blank set in the veriatons.
also when the variation is selected as fixed the customer should not need to then click on the fixed selected colours for the price to show, why is this happening it is selected in the backend so should need no action. See example in link. note that whit labeled no colour is the blank im referring too.

you will see that all fleece colours are excluded from choice except for white which is my work around for now until you can help where i can have a negative selection or deselect all.
