Limiting the number of swatches displayed on archive/shop page

I am building a store for a client. We currently have “Show swatches on archive / shop page” turned ON, as you can see here: https://8gd.a71.myftpupload.com/products/hats/

The client wishes that we could limit the number of swatches that are displayed on the archive/shop pages. As you can see, some hats have many color options, while others only have a few. The alignment of all the products in a row gets thrown off by the items that have more color options.

We wish we could pick a number of swatches to display, or a number of rows, and that all products would be limited to showing only this many swatches in the archive/shop view. If the product has more swatches than this number, the last one could be displayed as a + with an additional link to the product page, where the customer could then see all options.

Is this possible to add?

Thanks for your response – this appears to be exactly what we need.

However, I don’t have any global attributes saved. All of the color options are variations within each product. When I try to apply this setting, all swatches disappear from my catalog. See here: https://8gd.a71.myftpupload.com/products/

Does this setting only work with global attributes?

Just wanted to follow up – is there any way to use this setting with variations that are stored within each individual product?
