Have attribute selected going from category page

Hi I have the setting enabled for Catalog mode and linkable attribute to keep the attribute variation selected on the product page after clicking from catalog page.
This works fine when clicking on the attributes, but can this also work if you click the main product image from the catelog page. The product image changes when you hover over the attributes so ideally you could then click the image and it be linked to that attribute already when the product page loads.
