Will this be always the same procedure, that I have to login here, check for an update, download and upload ?

It should not be. You should get the update notification right on your dashboard.
Make sure to add your license in the License tab.
If you face the problem again, let us know.

variations not working anymore

The variations have been working well until recently.
The main image is not showing and variations can not be chosen.
Only after de-activating the free plugin and leaving only the Pro active choices are back, yet only as drop-down.
