Custom Product Attribute values as colours in Facet WP widget filter

Hi,
We have set the plugin up and are happy with the results but we have an issue with the colour filtering.
For variable products that have multiple colour options we have used custom product attributes and added our specific colours and added an image to each variation manually on the product page (rather than add the colours as attributes) and it is working great.
However, this means that when we filter by colour we have many colour options (for example we may have 10 names for the colour black) and we are looking to group these custom product attributes into main colours so the user only has to select ‘black’ in the widget filter to be show all 10 products with the different names for black.
Can you advise if this is possible or if you know of a solution?
