why are images (inserted with “Upload image”) deleted when I update the reply?

What I want to achieve: show dropdows as buttons if there is no image in variations, show image if there is one set in variation. I want the buttons to be styled and have the size of standard buttons, but the image to be shown as specified and shown on example link.
Your proposed solution with special attributes does not work (the attribute concerned is missing in the “choose attribute” dropdown and is not always first).
