Images not loading on archive page for variation products

Default images for variation products not appearing on product archive page. I thought I found a fix by selecting a default variation for each product, but this appears to only work if the selected variation is in stock. My variation settings are to allow out-of-stock products to display, and the variation colour is to be blurred.
