Thanks for reaching out to us. Unfortunately, it is not possible and it is a default behavior of WooCommerce.
If you select a variation (from the dropdown/clicking swatches) it will load the corresponding images of the variation.
The variation Image Preview option is not related to your need. I hope it will clear up your confusion.

Do not show image of the variation in the image gallery

We need the images of the variations not to be displayed in the product image gallery. We have unchecked the option “Variation Image Preview” but it is still displayed.
Would it be possible to deactivate the variable image in the gallery?
