Variation image swatches visible on product page

Our kitchen faucets are available in 31 finishes. I want to show a faucet in each finish on the variation swatches on the product page. How do I do this without creating a attribute for each unique product? See this page for an example: https://waterstoneco.com/product/waterstone-traditional-plp-pulldown-faucet/
I created a global attribute for all the faucets with a sample knob showing each color. On the product page I added the attribute then used for variations. Then I opened each variation and added a new photo, price and SKU number. When previewing the page, the main photo changes out when you click on a variation swatch, but I want to show the photo of the faucet I added instead of the knob photo.
Please let me know how to change the settings to allow these photos to show in variation swatches.
