Swatches not driving variations

I am still testing this out to see if I want to go PRO on this plugin.
I am having a problem though. I would like to use image swatches for option that do not drive variations. These would be just customer selected personalization options on the same SKU number.
When I uncheck the option “Used for variations” the swatches disappear from the product page even though “Visible on product page” is selected.
Is there a way to use swatches for customer selected personalization options that dont change the product?
I currently set that option to “Any…” on the variation but that causes problems with using WPClever Composite Products plugin. It wont add the product to the cart if the variation has “Use Any…” selected.
