Change Product Photo when color is selected in Single Product Template (w/o additional plugin)

Hello,
right now, it is necessary to select both attributes (color + size) to change the product photo view. Is there a possibility to change the Product photo when just the color attribute is selected without an additional plugin? Maybe just with the Images Gallery Plugin?
