Only image on colour, not size

I have a shop where we want to use the images for colours – but NOT for sizes.
If I check the “Convert default dropdowns to image type if variation has an image.” it changes both sizes and colours to images (because I have variation-images on all possible combinations).
How can I use the images – but only for colour, and let the sizes stay as it is default with the M, L, XL etc. in a square box?
