make out of stock variants “clickable”

hey guys,
we are using the option “Disable out of stock attribute variations” but this means, the variants are not “clickable” so is there any possibiltiy (custom code or what ever…) to make this variants clickable but the “x” of the variant should be also displayed if out of stock! the reason is: we would like to provide a “waitlist” for customers. so the customer can click the variant and a “wait” list symbol is getting displays. if we restock the variant, the customer get a mail of the restock. this mechanism is only working, if a variant is clickable but the “x” is also very nice, so the customer sees directly that this variant is “out of stock”. so we need a combination of both 🙂
is this possible? maybe for a update in the future or with custom code you can provide us?
